Frank is Back and He Wants Revenge
At the end of Superbia 1, Detective Frank O'Ryan was faced with the loss of his partner and the promotion of the cruel, power-hungry, Chief Erinnyes. Now, he's driven with the desire to take revenge and somehow avoid the same soul-crushing destruction that ruined Vic Cojo.
Superbia 2 continues the scariest, funniest, most subversive, police series ever written.
Just pray to God some of it isn't true.
Superbia 2 edition by Bernard Schaffer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Well, Mr. Schaffer has done it again. Book 2 picks up right where Book 1 concluded. Almost Detective Frank Ryan struggles to do the right thing, not because of a moral conflict -there isn't one, but rather because of a corrupt police bureaucracy. It would be so easy to walk away and play out his life else where, but that is not who Frank Ryan is.I have already purchased Book 3 and will start reading it as soon as I hit submit here. I've read the previews of Mr. Schaffer's other books, and while they are not of a genre that usually strikes my fancy I must admit that I an captivated by this author's storytelling and character development, so I am lurking about trying to decide upon which one to nibble.

Superbia 2 edition by Bernard Schaffer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I loved superbia 1, the only reason I didn't give this a 5 was because it was soooo short! If it was as long as Superbia 1 I'd have given it a 5 star. The Author is GREAT he knows his stuff and you get the true gritty police story which I love. Just wish he's make his stuff LONGER please!
This was my introduction to Mr. Schaffer's writing. I found his style to be raw and sarcastic. I was laughing out loud, literally, throughout the book. I tend to enjoy sarcasm, and was intrigued by this style of writing.
Living near to the area where this story takes place, I found it even more entertaining. Add to that the fact that crime drama, detective stories and thrillers always grab me and keep my attention, I was locked at the computer reading for a few hours, barely walking away for a drink.
I haven't read the first book in this series, but that is okay because this book stands well on it's own. I do look forward to reading the first, maybe re-reading this second book afterwards with new eyes.
The twist(s) near the end of the story had my heart stuck in my throat. I came to like Frank, despise Erinnyes and feel pity for Iolaus. I still wonder about Vic and his story, the ghost cop with the lantern and what happens with Aprille. I am truly looking forward to reading more!
Oh and... not a spoiler...I felt quilty about being relieved, but justice is served to one by the end.
I liked both suberbia 1 & 2 . This was A quick read that really held my attention. Once I got past the first two pages or so I couldn't put it down, and read it cover to cover. I found "Frank" to be a great character and that made the story even better for me. I would recommend this book to anyone that was looking for a good, quick read. Although I do have to say that I'm not a fan of the ending!
My biggest complaint is that there doesn't seem to be a third book in this series. I love this book for showing how no one is all good or all bad. It's disturbing to realize how many ethical and moral decisions police officers need to make each day, and how easily it could start to go really wrong. These are characters I want to know more about--I hope the author will keep writing!
There is a distinct improvement in the second part of Schaffer's trilogy of life on a small town PA police force. His storytelling skills show a marked improvement in moving the action from point A to point B. However, the abruptness of some events, with only a bare bones transition, makes the plot difficult to follow. I do enjoy the honesty of his stories as they mirror what many of my friends on the police force say.
I liked Superbia. I wouldn't call it "literary," but it's entertaining and I believe portrays police life rather accurately. The day-to-day ups and downs of work life and private life can be a tough balancing act. The main characters were real and the story line progressed well. I have to say I'm not entirely thrilled with the ending, but if one buys into karma, then it's appropriate. And maybe more stories are forthcoming so we can learn what happens next...
I just loved this book and intend to go on to the rest of the series. The dialog between Frank and Vic had me chuckling out loud several times. The characters were so well developed that I feel as if I know them, especially Frank and Vic. It's not often that I enjoy a book as much as I did this one. The Staff Sergeant was obnoxious.
The story was a look at the things the police have to deal with daily and I appreciate Mr. Schaffer writing the series.
